Volunteering at AVWS
Without the caring, responsible commitment and dedication of our volunteers, Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary would not be what it is today.
Volunteering at the Sanctuary comes in many forms, from hands-on work such as wielding hammers building and improving enclosures, and administrative responsibilities such as answering telephones. Volunteers also provide direct animal care by cleaning cages, washing bowls and buckets, shoveling wood shavings, and we have volunteers who help with events and special projects. The list of our volunteer needs goes on and on. No job is considered menial or unimportant, as every job that is accomplished is monumental in that it is something our staff then does not have to attend to thus giving them more time with the animals that need their care. On occasion we need specialized assistance e.g. electricians, plumbers, painters, carpenters but for the most part no experience is required, just a strong commitment and desire to help us help the animals. The only qualification necessary to volunteer at the Sanctuary is that the individual be 18 years or older and that they sign in at the office upon arrival. Those that are younger than 18 years must be supervised by an adult at all times and jobs assigned are age and physically appropriate.
Volunteering at the Sanctuary is very rewarding but can be an exhausting experience. See testimonials below:
This is my Third summer at Aspen and I hope there will be many more. I can’t think of a more rewarding experience than saving the lives of orphaned and injured wildlife. Nadine – Germany
Aspen is a great opportunity to work with and learn about our native wildlife. Hands on experience feeding babies is enjoyable and rewarding. It is also a great opportunity to meet people from all over the world. Stephanie – Ontario
Aspen is one of the most life changing experiences. I’m proud to say that I worked with some of the most kind, generous and hard-working people I have ever met.Wild animals require a lot of care and Aspen provides this to the best extent. I will always suppport Aspen as they have supported me. Marta Sawchyn- Quebec
